Unvented hot water cylinder installation in Stockport
If your showers are weak and your hot water runs out, an unvented cylinder replaces the loft tank and gives you mains pressure at every tap.
DJB Plumbing & Heating installs unvented hot water cylinders in Stockport homes, replacing gravity-fed systems with mains pressure hot water. Typical in the 1930s semis of Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and Heaton Moor where a family needs more than one good shower.
When an unvented cylinder makes sense
- Showers upstairs that are weak because the tank is only a few feet above them
- Hot water that runs out after one bath
- A loft tank you want rid of, for a loft conversion or just peace of mind
- A house with more than one bathroom and a family using them at the same time
- An old copper cylinder that has started to leak
- A system where the boiler is fine but the hot water side is not
What happens on the visit
- I check the incoming mains pressure and flow first. An unvented cylinder is only worth it if the mains can feed it properly, and I will tell you if it cannot.
- The old tank and cylinder come out, the new cylinder goes in with its expansion vessel, safety valves and discharge pipe to the outside, and the whole system is tested and certified.
Why not just fit a combi?
Sometimes that is the right answer, and I will say so. But a combi is a gas appliance and it can only heat water as fast as it can burn gas, so two showers at once is still a problem. A cylinder stores hot water at mains pressure, so a house with two bathrooms gets proper showers everywhere. Which is right depends on your house and your family.
What it costs
Unvented cylinders are quoted in writing after a check of the mains pressure and the space available. Labour, cylinder and safety components are itemised separately. Full details on the pricing page.
What customers say
I recently had work done by DJB Plumbing, including fitting new radiators throughout, installing a sink and removing old pipes in our new kitchen. I couldn't be more impressed with the results. From start to finish the service was professional, efficient and carried out to a very high standard.
Emma B., Google review
I highly recommend DJB Plumbing and Heating. Declan removed my old radiator and shower, ready for new tiling. He then returned to connect the new radiator and refit the shower. I'm really pleased with the finish. I'll definitely be booking him for more jobs in the near future.

Unvented cylinders questions
Will it improve my shower?
That is the main reason people have them. Mains pressure hot water at every outlet, no more waiting for a pump or being sat under the tank.
Can I get rid of the loft tank?
Yes. With an unvented cylinder there is no cold water storage tank, so the loft is free and there is nothing up there to freeze or leak.
Does the boiler need changing?
Usually not. Most boilers that heat an old cylinder will heat a new unvented one.
