Bath to wet room conversion, fully tanked with a linear drain

A 1930s semi in Cheadle Hulme where the customers wanted the bath gone and a proper walk-in wet room with no step and no tray, to a specification they had put together themselves.

The brief

The customers knew what they wanted: level access, a fixed glass screen, a wall-hung toilet and basin so the floor was clear, and specific tiles and fittings they had already chosen. They wanted one person to run the whole job and source everything.

What made it awkward

  • A wet room on a timber first floor needs the floor stiffening and a former set in with the right fall, or it will leak. This is the whole job.
  • The waste route for a level-access drain has to work with the joists; the linear drain was positioned to run parallel to them.
  • Tanking has to be complete and continuous, floor and walls, before any tile goes on, and it has to be flood tested.

What I did

  1. Bath, toilet and basin out, floor stripped to the joists.
  2. Floor stiffened with noggins and ply, a pre-sloped former set in at the shower end, and a linear drain plumbed to the existing waste with the correct fall.
  3. Concealed cistern frame and basin frame built into a new stud wall, hiding all pipework.
  4. Whole floor and the shower walls tanked with a liquid membrane and tape at every junction, then flood tested for 24 hours.
  5. Tiler in for the walls and the non-slip floor, working to the customers' tile choice. Electrician for the mirror, fan and lighting.
  6. Thermostatic valve, rain head and hand shower, fixed screen, wall-hung toilet and basin fitted, sealed and tested again.

The result

A wet room that has not leaked and will not, with a clear floor and nothing to trip over. Elle B.'s review, 'sourced a tiler, electrician and all materials to our specification', is this job.

What the customer said

Complete bathroom renovation from a bath to a wet room. Brilliant from start to finish, sourced a tiler, electrician and all materials to our specification. Nothing was too much trouble, and clean and tidy while at work. So pleased with the finished result.
