The brief

The customers had a converted loft with a small shower room in it and wanted a proper bathroom: a freestanding bath they could actually lie down in, a walk-in shower, a wall-hung toilet, and a vanity unit with storage. They'd chosen large-format marble-effect porcelain and wanted it everywhere, floor and walls, with as few visible joins as possible.

What made it awkward

  • Every wall slopes. The only full-height space is under the dormer, which is where the bath had to go for headroom, but the dormer is also the furthest point from the soil stack.
  • A freestanding bath needs its waste and hot and cold supply to come up through the floor in exactly the right spot, and the loft floor is joists and boards over a bedroom ceiling.
  • The shower had to sit under the eaves, so the shower head, the valve and the screen all had to be set out for a person standing, not for the tallest point of the room.
  • Large-format tile on a sloping ceiling needs a flat, solid substrate, so the plasterboard under the eaves had to be replaced before the tiler could start.

What I did

  1. Stripped the old shower room back to the joists and studs, and replaced the boarding under the eaves with tile backer board so the tiler had a rigid surface on the slopes.
  2. Set out the bath position from the dormer window, then ran a new 40mm waste with the correct fall across the joists to the stack, notching within the allowed limits and boarding over so nothing would sag.
  3. Ran hot and cold to a floor-standing bath tap position, capped and pressure-tested before the floor went down.
  4. Built the wet area under the eaves with a linear drain and tanked it, set the shower valve and head heights for a standing adult under the slope, and fitted the screen once the tiles were in.
  5. Fitted the concealed cistern frame for the wall-hung toilet and the vanity unit with a wall-hung basin, all pipework hidden in the frame or the wall.
  6. Brought in a tiler for the porcelain and an electrician for the mirror light and the fan, and coordinated both so the customers only ever spoke to me.
  7. Final fix, sealed, tested every outlet under pressure, and walked the customers round before signing off.

The result

A full bathroom in a space that was previously a cramped shower room, with the bath positioned under the window where the head height is best and the light falls on it. The tiling runs uninterrupted from the floor up the slopes, and every bit of pipework is either in the floor or behind a frame. Nothing to see but the fittings.

What the customer said

I couldn't be happier with my bathroom renovation. Dec was incredibly hardworking, professional and reliable, completing the project within the agreed timescale. His excellent communication and attention to detail made the whole process smooth and stress-free.
