Small box room turned into a walk-in shower room

A former box room off the landing of an Edwardian semi in Heaton Moor, roughly 1.6 by 2.2 metres, turned into a second shower room for a family of five.

The brief

The family had one bathroom for five people and a box room nobody used. They wanted a shower room that felt like a proper room, not a cupboard, with a walk-in shower, a basin with storage and somewhere to hang towels. Black fittings and a round mirror were the brief for the look.

What made it awkward

  • At 1.6 metres wide there was no room for a tray and a screen and a basin side by side, so the layout had to be a walk-in with the shower at the far end and the basin by the door.
  • The box room had no plumbing at all. Hot, cold and a waste had to be brought from the bathroom next door, through a solid wall.
  • The soil stack was on the other side of the house. A macerator was considered and rejected; instead the waste was run under the landing floor with enough fall to reach the stack.

What I did

  1. Cored through the wall from the existing bathroom for hot, cold and the shower waste, and lifted the landing boards to run the waste to the stack with a proper fall.
  2. Built a stud wall at the shower end to carry the concealed valve and the wall-hung basin frame, so all the pipework is hidden.
  3. Set a low-profile tray with a linear drain against the far wall and tanked the shower end.
  4. Fitted a black thermostatic valve, rain head and hand shower, a wall-hung basin with a black mixer, and a black towel radiator plumbed off the heating.
  5. Tiler in for the large-format wall tiles, electrician in for the backlit mirror, the extractor and a downlight.
  6. Fixed glass panel, sealed, tested, and handed over.

The result

A second shower room that gets used every morning, in a space that was storing suitcases. Ellen W.'s review, 'small space but Declan left us with an amazing walk-in shower room', is this job.
