Pipe repairs and leak detection in Stockport
Weeping joints, split pipes, damp patches under floors and stains on ceilings. Traced properly rather than guessed, then repaired or replaced.
DJB Plumbing & Heating traces and repairs leaking pipework across Stockport homes, from a weeping compression joint under the sink to a split pipe under a suspended floor. Most leaks are found and fixed on the first visit, with the price agreed before any floorboards come up.
Leaks and pipework I repair
- Damp patches on ceilings and walls with no obvious source
- Weeping compression joints and pinholed copper
- Split pipes after a freeze
- Original galvanised steel and lead pipework in older Stockport terraces
- Stopcocks that have seized or will not shut the water off fully
- Leaking overflow pipes, waste pipes and washing machine connections
- Heating pipework leaks that drop the system pressure
What happens on the visit
- I start by narrowing down where the water can be coming from: which pipes run through that area, whether it leaks when the heating is on, when a tap is run, or all the time. That usually points to a two-foot section rather than a whole floor.
- Then I lift the minimum needed to get at it. I'd rather take up two boards than six, and I put them back.
- The repair is made, tested under pressure, and I leave everything dry before covering it up again.
Old pipework in Stockport houses
A lot of the terraces in Offerton, Edgeley, Heaton Norris and Reddish still have galvanised steel pipe from when they were built, and some still have a lead main coming in. Steel rusts from the inside, narrows, and eventually pinholes. I can replace sections as they fail, or re-run a whole house in copper or plastic during a kitchen or bathroom refit when the floors are up anyway.
What it costs
Leak tracing and repair is charged by the hour, with most single leaks found and fixed within the first hour or two plus parts. A new stopcock is usually a one-hour job. Re-piping a whole house is quoted in writing after a look. Full details on the pricing page.
What customers say
Declan is fabulous. Lovely guy, professional, friendly and does a great job. His prices are competitive, too. He's been to us twice now to sort out leaks and has resolved the issue both times. Happy to recommend.

Declan brilliant from start to finish. After moving house we found our bathroom had a lot of problems and contacted Declan. He reassured us it was all sortable. He helped us work to our budget for repairs and remodelling and we are really happy with our new bathroom and no more leaks.

Pipe repairs and leaks questions
How do you find a leak under the floor?
By working out which pipes run through the wet area and when the leak happens. If it only happens with the heating on, it's a heating pipe. If it's constant, it's a mains or hot water feed. That narrows it to a short run, and I lift the boards over that run only.
My stopcock will not turn. Can you replace it?
Yes. I turn the water off at the outside stop tap in the pavement, fit a new quarter-turn valve in place of the old gate valve, and test it. Usually an hour. Every house should have a stopcock that works, and a surprising number in Stockport do not.
Is a small drip worth calling about?
Yes. A drip under a sink rots the cupboard base; a drip under a floor rots the joists. Both are cheap to fix now and expensive to fix in a year. If it is dripping, ring.
